Relationship Series – The Vital Importance of Family Devotions

Obviously, this isn’t the post I promised on my belief “series”. I get bored writing about one thing for too long, and I think it stands to reason that people would get bored reading about the same thing for too long. So instead, I decided to alternate with a series on relationships that I’ve want to write for some time now. And I’m even starting that in the middle! (If this change of subject bothers you, you can just pretend that the title of this post is “Belief – Family Devotions”)

For as long as I can remember, my father made a point of doing family devotions every single night of the week. When we were young, we had a 3-ring binder full of pictured Bible stories. As we grew older we transitioned to the Bible itself. Each night we would read a chapter from a book of the Bible until we had read the entire Bible, then we started it all over again (though my mom would still take my sister and I into private Bible time when the older kids and dad came to Song of Solomon)

I can even remember the amazement of our friends coming over to our house for a sleep over and finding themselves in the middle of such a unique situation. But even apart from family devotions I can remember finding my dad early in the morning diligently studying the Bible and in the midst of prayer.

These two events, family and private devotions, were engraved on my mind and helped me to come to a proper understanding of devotions as I read the Bible.

At this point, let me state what I believe to be the Biblical point of family devotions and then proceed to provide proof of this point from the scriptures:

For a Christian family to not have a time of family devotions is in direct opposition of God’s desire and therefore sin. It is shame to a husband, sorrow to a wife, and sowing the seeds of disobedience in the children.

I wish I could word that a little more strongly. I truly desire to emphasize that any husband who is not leading his family in devotions is walking the path of rebellion against God regardless of his intentions! This is true for ANY husband no matter what stage in life he becomes a husband in or whether or not he has any children in the house.

I want to start with some practical proof because this is the least important kind of proof. Experiences are nice and help provide a point of reference for a listener (or reader), but in the end, experiences are meaningless unless they are validated by the Bible. As Romans 3:4 says “ Not at all! Let God be true, and every man a liar. As it is written: ‘So that you may be proved right when you speak and prevail when you judge.’” (Translation: God’s Word trumps man’s experiences) Still I start with the lesser proof to lead into the greater proof.

Amy and I decided early on in our dating relationship that we desired to do devotions with one another. In the process of doing so we came to learn two things about our relationship:

  1. Whenever we were diligently in the scriptures we flourished. We spoke kinder to one another, we more fully adopted God’s standards for relationship roles, and we dealt with others more appropriately.
  2. Whenever we were not in the scriptures we were more likely to be short with one another, to be self-centered, etc.

From observing this we realized a simple and fundamental truth about our lives and time spent in the scriptures: When a true believer spends time in the scriptures they cannot help but to act in a manner pleasing to God.

Now, with the lesser proof out of the way, let’s look at some scriptural backing. To start with, I want to display the proof for individual study and then apply that outward to family worship. (Taken from the NASB version of the Bible)

Psalm 1:

1 How blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, Nor stand in the path of sinners, Nor sit in the seat of scoffers!
2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD, And in His law he meditates day and night.
3 And he will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water, Which yields its fruit in its season, And its leaf does not wither; And in whatever he does, he prospers.

There’s a lot that can be learned from these three verses but I want to focus just on some quick key points:

The first is that God lists two kinds of people, those who delight is in the law of the Lord and those who walk in the counsel of wicked. The importance of this distinction cannot be understated. A true believer in Christ will at some time come to the point where they realize that they must be walking in the law of the Lord (The Bible).

The second thing of importance is that God lists a tangible benefit from spending time in His Word: stability and spiritual prosperity. You can most likely think of someone who is a complete slave to their own emotions. A person who everyone is always walking on eggshells with for fear of somehow rubbing them the wrong way and sending them into a complete breakdown. This is the person who is not spending time in God’s Word, verse 4 describes them as chaff (very light plant parts basically) in the wind; they are driven in whatever direction the wind happens to be blowing at that time. Conversely, the person who is in God’s word is firmly rooted, the wind can blow all day long and while that may rustle it’s branches, the tree itself is undisturbed. Additionally, we also gain the benefit of spiritual prosperity, that is we grow in Christ and share the fruits of our spiritual lives with others.

So we can see, that we have a direct command from God for spending time in the Word (Verse 2 the Christian’s delight is in the Law of the Lord). We can also see some benefits of personal devotions. Let’s take that a step farther and look at some proof for teaching children with Bible devotions.

Duet. 1:4: "Remember the day you stood before the LORD your God at Horeb, when the LORD said to me, 'Assemble the people to Me, that I may let them hear My words so they may learn to fear Me all the days they live on the earth, and that they may teach their children.'”

Duet 6:6-7: “6 And these words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart; 7 and you shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up.

Psalm 78:5-7 "5 He decreed statutes for Jacob and established the law in Israel, which he commanded our forefathers to teach their children, 6 so the next generation would know them, even the children yet to be born, and they in turn would tell their children. 7 Then they would put their trust in God and would not forget his deeds but would keep his commands.

We’ll stop there because Psalm 78:5-7 REALLY drives home my point here. We have been command by God to teach out children so that they would trust in God and would keep His commands. I honestly cannot say it any more eloquently. God commands personal time in the word and He commands teaching our children as well.

So let me bring this home by demonstrating the proof for a complete time of family devotion.

Ephesians 5:25-28 says “25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her 26 to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, 27 and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. 28 In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself.”

In these verses God gives husbands a heavy command (for reference this comes just after God commands wives to submit to their husbands, so if you’re a wife and you find yourself constantly berating your husband like you’re Kate from Jon and Kate + 8 (take that pop culture references!) you need to recognize that behavior as sin and expel it from your life). The command is to love our wives as Christ loves the Church and then the example given is of Christ’s care for our spiritual condition.

Husbands, you cannot be loving your wife in a Biblical role if you are not leading her into time spent in the scriptures. Or, to say it more bluntly: Husbands, if you are not leading your wife into time spent in the scripture you are living in rebellious sin by not showing your wife the love God has command you to demonstrate to her.

So let me exhort you husbands. It doesn’t matter if you’re a newly wed couple, a middle aged daddy, or just an old coot with all the kids out of the house. The importance of family devotions cannot be understated. And more than that, if we go back to Psalm 1:2 we see that it’s not just time spent doing a packet with some scripture references, it’s not reading from a paraphrase of scripture like “Our Daily Bread” or “The Message”. It is time spent reading directly from God’s word, NOT what someone believes God’s word to mean (like a sermon).

Now, obviously, there’s nothing wrong with the above listed items as study tools or additions to Bible reading, but understand that the command itself calls for study straight from God’s Word.

Setting up a nightly time of devotions can be one of the hardest things you ever do. There are a TON of reasons why you just don’t do it. You’re exhausted from work, you need to be studying, or cooking, or cleaning, the baby needs a bath, you need to exercise, you’ve never done anything like this and don’t know how to do it, it would be too embarrassing to start after not doing it for so long, you don’t think your spouse would be very interested, etc. But understand that you will make time for the things you want to do, so what you have to ask yourself is: How important to I really consider God in my life? If He’s important enough, then you’ll find time, and if He’s not… well He’s not.

I hope you decide God is important and so I’m going to provide a list of helpful hints on how to start your own family devotion time. If you have young children, I further encourage you to make sure that you and your spouse spend time immediately following your child’s Bible time to read from the scriptures together as adults.

  1. Commit to doing it every night for 2 weeks. This gives you a goal to shoot for, once you’ve done it every night for 2 weeks, shoot for another 2, or for 4! Saying you’re gonna do it every night forever is an unattainable goal with no sense of victory. Start small and enjoy the feeling of accomplishment when you succeed!
  2. Set up a time you’re going to do it at and then drop everything and do it when the time comes! It can be easy for devotions to be shuffled right off the schedule for the evening. If they’re going to happen you must show yourselves and your children that God comes first by dropping whatever it is you’re working on and devoting time to God.
  3. Start out easy. You’re gonna wear yourself out if you jump into Revelation or Leviticus right off the bat. Choose a book that’s easy to follow. A good example would be one of the Gospels from the New Testament or Genesis from the Old Testament.
  4. Swap it up! Make sure not to spend all your time in the New or Old Testament. Hebrews 13:8 says “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” God didn’t magically change character between the Old and New Testament, you need to read both to come to a proper understanding of who He is and His plan for redeeming His wayward creation.
  5. Quiz one another (or your children if you have any) about what happened previously in the book. Reading the Bible is only half the equation, Psalm 1:2 speaks of meditating on the Scriptures. To meditate on the Scripture you need to be actively engaging your mind in the big picture of both what is happening in that specific book as well as what is going on in terms of the scriptures as a whole.
  6. Pray together. It doesn’t matter if you start things off with prayer or finish with prayer just make sure that you take the time to praise God and lift up your requests to Him with your family. It not only alerts you to what’s going on in one another lives, but it draws you closer together in God and reminds you that these aren’t just fairy tales, this is the Word of God and we are privileged to come before Him in prayer.

I give this final challenge: I challenge any married couple to participate in nightly devotions for at least 2 weeks (at least a month would be even better) and tell me their relationship with one another has not improved. Moreover, I further challenge that you will not even be able to come to me and tell me that your own personal attitude has not been changed.

I hope you accept my challenge.

Well, I’ll wrap it up there. I really pray that anyone who reads this will be convicted to devote themselves to family devotions (Family “Bible Time” as my parents called it). I will never forget one person I know (who will go nameless), a grown adult, who after seeing my father lead us in the scriptures wept privately afterwards because their father had not made the same point to give God the glory and honor in his own family. Fathers, do not miss out on doing what God has called you to do, and thank you dad for teaching me that God comes first and thank you mom for supporting him in this decision and letting us kids see the two of you unified in Christ.

Amazing Soup Extravaganza

Sunday night Matthew and I set out to make a homemade chicken noodle soup -- we even wanted to make the noodles ourselves! It was great fun, but took quiet a few hours. Patrick and Jan helped us indulge in the masterpiece. Below is the recipe if you are interested and wanted to try it out for yourself. (This was all inspired by a family friend's blog: http://greavesrecipes.blogspot.com/ --- Thanks Greaves girls!)

Amy and Matthew Homemade Chicken Noodle Soup
Serves 4

All Ingredients needed:

1 egg, beaten 1 cup sifted all-purpose flour
½ teaspoon salt ½ teaspoon baking powder (optional)
2 tablespoons milk 1 cup chopped carrots
2 cups chicken (1/2 a chicken) 1 cup chopped celery
10 cups water 8 chicken bullion cubes

Preparation:

1. Set chicken to cook with a crock pot

2. While chicken is cooking, make sure you have all the ingredients

3. When chicken is finished cut up and place into fridge until it’s ready to add to the soup (Step 4 in “Preparing the Soup”).

Belief - Faith

IMG_3864%5B4%5D%5B1%5D%5B13%5D[1]

Sorry this one took so long, I was having a hard time really explaining what I wanted to say without making this ridiculously long.

Last time I stated that Faith is not an end all reason.  Faith cannot be the “why” of any question.  It is merely a layover on a flight to a reason.

Well, let’s see if I cannot quantify this belief of mine.  To begin let’s start with what faith is.  When I asked myself this question I came back with three answers.  The first is the dictionary answer, which (as I previously stated) is “something that is believed especially with strong conviction” (Merriam-Webster).  The second is the Biblical answer which is found in Hebrews 11:1 “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.”

Both of these definition are fine, but they are both lacking to my mind and it’s hard to really explain why.  If I was pressed for a reason, I would have to say that both those definitions seem like “how” answers.  They explain how faith is played out but don’t do well with the what faith is.  This is especially true for the verse in Hebrews as the context it is in is the “Hall of Faith” chapter that describes how Old Testament figures of yester-year acted out their faith.

After thinking about it for a long time, I would use this definition to define the “what” of faith.  “Faith is the acceptance of unknown variables as facts based upon proven assurances; proven at least so far as the individual possessing the faith is concerned.” Faith is to life what postulates are to Mathematics.

For those who aren’t familiar with postulates, here’s what they basically are.  Postulates are things that cannot be proven true for every situation (proven with a nice, neat, mathematical equation that is), but are accepted as true anyways.  This acceptance is based on the fact that it’s we can demonstrate it works for a given equation.  Because it’s true for a finite set of equations we go ahead and assume it’s true for any given equation.

Let’s see if I can’t reword that for those who don’t like math.  With a postulate we can prove it’s true on a small thing, so we accept it as truth for the large thing.  This is the essence of what I believe faith to be.  Faith is not blind.  Someone who blindly accepts a teaching as being true is in violation of scriptures (1 John 4:1-4 tells us to test even angels to make certain they are from God, Acts 17:11 demonstrates that the appropriate response to a new teaching is to examine the scriptures to see if these things are true or not).

I guess I’m gonna put a stop to my explanation there.  I cannot more fully quantify what belief is without talking in circles at this point.  So instead, I’ll wrap it up by giving a quick bullet point list of what I’m really trying to drive home about faith.

  • Faith is not blind.  There may be times when we have to go out on the limb, but we do so because we have firm knowledge that the tree is alive and sturdy.
  • Faith is an extension of a deeper foundation with God.  The greater the foundation, the greater our faith.
  • The above is true because as we understand more about God, the more we trust in Him, the greater our faith will be.

And that my friends, is what I believe about faith.  Next time I’ll take a bit of a closer look into what I believe about the Bible (I’ve already stated WHY it’s the basis of my belief, but now I’d like to take the opportunity to further look into what I believe about the Bible itself.)

Closing a chapter in my life

Matthew is a much better writer than I am. I am glad he has been able to write out all that has happened. Let me just say that I would not have made it through without Matthew in this situation. He was there for me when I thought all was lost. He was the brains behind all the emails which required extreme detail. He was the laughter behind the agony. He was the distractions behind the worry. He was the good listener for 9 solid days of stress. He was the logical one when I was distraught and confused. He was the generous one when I wanted justice to be served to her. He was the polite one when I wanted to yell at her for her wrong doings to me. He was the consistent one when I was in shambles. He was the rock when I needed him. Thank you for all you did for me during this stressful time Matthew. Although he was getting a little grumpy towards day 7 out of 9 ;) Thanks for hanging in there through it all!

Also thanks to all of you, who gave me advice, prayed for me and let me cry on your shoulder or had to listen to my complaints. Please continue to pray that she lets by gones be by gones and does not try to collect any additional dues from me as I have been stuck with a large sum of fees because of her. Lets close this bizarre and unfair chapter in my life!

Richardson Resolutions

Well, we finally got everything resolved with Amy’s crazy roommate.  When last we left, Amy and I had just finished a wonderful evening with the Richardson police laughing at her crazy roommate.  The following day began a week of EXTREME annoyance.  The roommate (who is, I kid you not, off her proverbial rocker), sent Amy an e-mail demanding that all future communication between them be in e-mail format for “documentation.”

So, Amy and I carefully wrote her exactly what we were and were not willing to do.  With each progressing e-mail, her roommate became more and more belligerent, constantly refused to respond to inquires, and more than once was upset that we wanted everything spelled out despite the fact that she was the one who wanted everything documented in the first place!  In fact, on several occasions, she would say one thing, then in the next e-mail take something we had said and repeat it as if it was her own idea (her own idea that contradicted the previous e-mail.)

The entire farce has lead me to believe that the following is the correct timeline of events.

  1. Crazy roommate signs onto apartment with Amy hoping for her very own Best Friend (slave)
  2. Crazy roommate realizes that Amy already has a female best friend
  3. Crazy roommate begins to become belligerent in her dealings with Amy.
  4. Crazy roommate posts craigslist ad asking to move in with someone planning on silently ditching Amy and leaving her with the bill
  5. Crazy roommate realizes she’s legally bound to apartment and picks fight with Amy, I step in and Crazy roommate (CR) throws hissy fit that she can’t bully Amy; CR calls cops.
  6. CR tries several lame attempts to get her own way in this situation and quickly realizes that Amy and I have a very firm grasp of our legal rights/responsibilities and is forced to do things our way
  7. Amy and CR meet with management, Amy kicks CR out of apartment (YAY!)
  8. CR pretends like she’s moving in with someone else who already has an apartment… but they don’t have a couch… or a washer/dryer….  Right.

Well, I haven’t mentioned 7 and 8 yet.  But the long and short is after several days of e-mailing back in forth, the CR is forced to go to a meeting with the management and Amy.  The CR tries to lie to Amy about not being approved to live in an apartment by herself, but the management had already told us she could.  The CR tried to work a deal where Amy would be stuck paying for rent on an apartment she couldn’t live in for the next 60 days while the CR tried to find a roommate.

Needless to say, Amy jumped in and said no.  Amy then proceeded to say that the CR needed to get out of the apartment immediately and that Amy would pay the rent on her own.  The management said okay, and the CR had to move out by midnight on Saturday.

While the management went off to get some paperwork, the CR tried to make a big show of “talking” to someone on the phone about who her new roommate was.  Which is pretty odd when you consider the fact that she was just begging for 60 days to try and find a roommate.  Just one more lie from this insane (I wish there was a stronger word to describe the level of ineptitude/immaturity that this girl displayed) little girl.  This was shortly followed by the CR trying to buy Amy’s couch in exchange for Amy not having to pay the electric bill for the month Amy wasn’t really around the apartment anyway.

Regardless, the CR had to move out on Saturday.  Amy, her mom and stepdad, and myself all went by the apartment on Saturday and hung out for a while to make sure the CR didn’t pull any acts of vengeance.  After a while Amy and I leave and go see “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs” (Excellent movie!  Go see it, it has Mr. T as a voice actor!)

When we get back we discovered several little things that were definitely the CR’s version of acts of vengeance:

  • She left a broken wine bottle in the parking spot in front of the garage to the apartment
  • She replaced the working light bulb in the fridge (which CR had bought) with the old one that was burned out. (As a side not, the bulb had burned out a month and a half ago!  Who keeps a burned out bulb for a month and a half?!)
  • She left her sink drawers in the bathroom dirty
  • She had placed “Art” decals on the wall in the living room.  She took the decals, but they left a MAJOR sticky residue that she didn’t even bother to clean.

Nothing major, but all of them are definitely things I would imagine a 12-year-old would do to their parents as acts a vengeance… which describes her maturity level fairly well.

But!  Today the locks were all changed on the apartment and the CR would be officially breaking and entering if she tried to force her way in!  We got Amy settled and she should be peacefully sleeping even as I type!

Thanks for everyone who was praying for Amy safety and for her general well-being in the midst of all this.  Amy and I would also ask that you be pray for the CR herself.  I don’t call her CR to be rude to her, but because as you’ve seen that’s what she really is.  She claims Christianity, but she lacks any evidence of it in her life.  So please be praying for her salvation, or at the very least that she learns maturity.

At one point in Saturday, Amy’s mom and stepdad disappeared and when the CR walked past I ask if she had seen them.  The CR tried to give me a death stare but basically just looked like an overall idiot.  The kid lacks any development beyond an 7th grade level.  Though now that I think about it, it could be that she’s mentally handicapped and lacks the ability to mature beyond a 7th grade level.

Regardless, please be praying for her and thanks again!  With any luck, Amy will post a blog post latter on in the upcoming week with her impression of the events.

My AWESOME Richardson Adventure

Today was an amazing awesome and exciting day. Though to understand the significance of today, we must go back in time just a little. Right around 2 weeks ago, Amy’s roommate decided to make a chore chart without talking to Amy about it first. An action which Amy and I both felt was a little like treating Amy like a 5 year old (we totally had a chore chart when I was a kid, doing enough chores got you stuff. I think I got a NES game for doing it once, and the chore chart Amy’s roommate made came complete with color coding and daily reminders). Obviously, Amy (and myself) were slightly offended at this action, but no one ever talked about it.

Enter today. Amy has noticed that items that belong to the roommate are slowly, but steadily, disappearing. When Amy tried to talk to her roommate the night before she got a very cold shoulder, and when we woke up this morning we found two EXTREMELY interesting things. The first was her roommate had deleted all of us off facebook. Just BAM! Gone. The second thing was her roommate had posted a craigslist add looking for someone she could move in with.

Okay, so obviously this girl has been majorly offended but rather than talking to Amy rationally and maturely, she’s going around and subversively making plans to just leave (and by extension leave Amy stuck with the bill). Well, this concerns Amy and I, and so we spend most the day attempting to contact her roommate via various methods. After about 4 hours of intermittent attempts, Amy finally gets a text message that says, “What do you want.” (note the period and not a question mark). Amy responds that she feels like she needs to talk with her roommate over the phone and not via texting. We get no response.

Finally, Amy asks me to just come over because she feels that her roommate will not be returning that evening and we want to watch the premiere of the new season of “The Office”. Shortly after I arrive (around 5ish), we finally get a very long e-mail from her roommate, not a call, just an e-mail. The gist was the roommate felt that Amy wasn’t pulling her fair share of the work around the apartment.

Now I must take a break to make a very quick side note that this apartment boarders on immaculate. Both Amy and her roommate are diligent to put away the dishes they dirty and keep the common area relatively clean. In fact, Amy is extra diligent to leave nothing of her own in the main area for prolonged periods of time out of respect. The worst you could find in that room are a couple cat toys of the roommate.

Amy again pursues peace with this kid and replies that she would love to talk with her roommate, and the roommate promises to be home early.

So Amy and I head off for free Chick-fil-a night (time is now about 5:45) where we have an awesome time. On the way out of the parking lot, we notice that there’s a lady with her car stalled out in the middle of the road. I go ahead and hop out and offer to push her car into the next parking lot (just a little down the road). I get a couple steps (slow steps, it was a VERY heavy car) and two other young men come and join me (thank goodness!). The three of us get it pushed into the parking lot and Amy and I head out.

We still got an hour and a half-ish before “The Office” comes on, and we’re expecting her roommate to get home shortly after she gets off at 6-o’clock. So we put on Wall-E and chill out.

Her roommate doesn’t show up. No sooner had "The Office" turned on then her roommate walks into the apartment (8-o’clock on the dot, way to get home early). Amy is initially turned down when she attempts to talk to her roommate, so I hide out in Amy’s room and Amy tries again. With me out of there, the roommate starts to pack-up all her dishes and silverware while Amy tries to talk with her. Amy says she can clean more and the roommate (quite angrily) replies, “Well, I guess that’s okay for now.” But the conversation doesn’t really end, Amy tries to figure out what’s going on, but the roommate refuses to actually talk. Instead she just keeps packing her stuff and giving non-committal answers.

Finally, Amy comes back into her room and begins to sob. Nothing is getting solved, it’s just escalating. I go out into the room with Amy and politely confront her roommate. I tell her that we all need to talk and try and get this peacefully resolved. To which I’m angrily told it’s doesn’t concern me.

Now of course this is completely false. For starters, this is my girlfriend we’re talking about, and further, I kinda have some long term plans with this Amy of mine, her roommate is giving every indication of splitting leaving Amy with some sever finical repercussions. The kind that can damage a credit report at a time when it really needs to be spotless. I politely tell her as much at which point she turns off in a huff, stomps into her room, slams the door in locks it shut! What are we, teenagers?!

So I begin talking to the roommate through the door. I say we really need to discuss this, that some feelings were majorly hurt and Amy wants to reconcile with her roommate. I explain that we understand that the roommate believed she was being communicative by making a chore chart, but it wasn’t true communication.

Dead silence from the room. Okay, so reconciliation is a no go, time to switch gears a little. At this point I politely explain that we really need to get it resolved because the two of them entered a contractual agreement whereby both individuals are finically obligated to the apartment. That means that if one of them leaves, and the other can not pay the full amount of the rent, then they both get evicted and it goes on BOTH credit reports.

This finally causes a huge eruption, where the roommate yells out, “Who said I’m leaving! What makes you think I’m leaving!” Though I didn’t respond to her taunt, the answer is the craigslist ad and all the packing, just an off hand thought. Regardless, I continue to try to politely reason with her and finally tell her that this isn’t how two Christian people should treat one another, that we need to reach a peaceful solution. At this point she storms out of her room with her purse. I make sure I’m not in her way, nor do I attempt to stop her. Amy and I really are attempting to open dialogue and don’t want anything misinterpreted. She storms down the stairs and opens the door. She turns around and screams “You’re not my F****** father!” slams the door, locks it and heads off. Nice.

It doesn’t end there however! Amy, at this point, is way scared. Her roommate has gone off her rocker. She’s adamantly refused our every attempt of peaceful dialogue and has begun to demonstrate acts of aggression (though fortunately, it's been limited to verbal and physical only to doors), and I’m trying to calm her down. Shortly there after, the roommate returns talking on the phone (being prompted by someone with what to say). She tells me that she wants me out, that her name is on the lease and if I make her fell threatened or uncomfortable then I have to leave.

I ask her if I have threatened her in anyway. She’s quick to respond no. I calmly and quietly let her know that Amy is also on the lease, that I am her invited guest and she needs me right now, I’m not about to leave and legally she cannot make me. She threatens to call the cops and I politely respond “You are welcome to do so.”

So she leaves again. Amy is freaking out that the cops are gonna come and sure enough, 15 minutes later we hear sirens. Humorously, however, it turns out to be an ambulance and fire truck, something happened to someone else in the apartment building next to us.

Amy and I sit down for devotions and another 15 minutes pass. There’s a knock at the door and who is it but the friendly Richardson Police. We go ahead an invite them in and explain what’s all going on. The two of them inform us that they cannot legally make me leave. Moreover, as the conversation progresses and they learn the why this argument began, the more they begin to laugh. Amy goes off with one of the police men to talk with her roommate outside while me and the other chat it up inside.

The two of us hit it off quiet nicely and more and more his jaw drops to hear about the happenings of this argument. It ends with him basically telling me that this is ridiculous, and it’s clear that he has found this whole thing to be a humorous waste of time and the roommate was crazy for calling it in.

Amy comes back in at this point and I let the officer know that we had been packing and were actually just waiting to talk with them before we left. We didn’t want the roommate calling them and then them not hearing our side of what happened. If she was going to blow all of this to an absolutely ridiculous proportion just to avoid talking with Amy, then we weren’t going to let it get us in trouble.

So Amy finished packing and as she’s coming downstairs, one of the officers runs up to her and says, “You know you don’t have to go, right?” AWESOME! The officer was completely on our side, they were really wonderful guys. I shook their hands and thank them for coming out. Amy joked with them and apologize they were brought out on something so stupid. “You know… women!” Amy told them as we left. The two of the laughed and one commented that he had two girls of his own.

Meanwhile, Amy parted pleasantly with her roommate. She asked if she was moving out, to which the other replied “Well, I pretty much have to now don’t I!” To which Amy, cool as a cucumber, replied, “I’m sorry it went down like this.”

While both Amy and I recognize that her roommate brought this down on her self (she consistently refused to talk with Amy and instead chose methods such as chore charts, secret craigslist postings, and one sentence quips as she ran out the door so no one could respond, then she continued to defend her grossly inappropriate, and un-Christ-like attitude to the point that she called the cops at a point where Amy and I were quietly watching TV in her room, sorry but she built this house of cards with her own hands one piece at a time), we don’t harbor her any ill will. We find it tragic that her roommate so consistently choose the path of immaturity, but that’s life. We’re trying to make sure that the roommate can get out of the lease as quickly as possible since she has non-stop made it clear that she she no longer wants to live there anymore. And we’re praying that matures past this self-destructing attitude that is, quiet frankly, inappropriate for a 22 year old.

And that’s my incredibly AWESOME Richardson Adventure!

Obama and 9/11

IMG_3864[4][1][4][1]

For months now, I’ve been wondering what Obama will do for his first 9/11 in office. My wondering revolved largely around the fact that he is 1) trying to distance himself from the previous administration even though he’s handling the war identically to Bush and 2) he has set himself up as a very pro-Islamic/pro-Arabic president and I was wondering how he was going to handle the day where Americans remember the single greatest (radical) Islamic attack since the crusades.

For those who haven’t seen it, here' is Obama’s speech made this morning.

I found a couple points of interests (including his copious use of scriptures, albeit misquoted and abused, right after saying we weren’t a Christian nation, the way he never really mentioned the attack itself, just referenced to things around it, and his redefinition of the war as fighting Al-Qaeda rather than terrorists).

But most interesting to me is the fact that he is attempting to redefine this whole day. The way he’s trying to coerce us into forgetting that we, as a nation, must remain vigilant. And I don’t mean vigilant against Islam or Arabics, that would foolish and racist. I mean vigilant against those who would seek to do us harm regardless of if they’re a terrorist who believes it is the only way to assure salvation, or some guy out in West Texas who follows the original teachings of Joseph Smith to the point of sexually abusing young women, or even if it is the wholesale slaughter of our children via abortion.

People may disagree about that last one, but the point is today is supposed to be a day of remembrance for vigilance. A day were we recall what happens when we get too lackadaisical, when we ignore the warning signs and fail to co-operate with one another.

Instead Obama wants us to toss aside the remembrance of what happened here. Oh, he talks about that “barbaric event” when he starts to discuss Afghanistan, but as long as the focus is on the US, it’s darkened skies, and falling planes. And I think that’s wrong. I think what he’s doing is insulting. 8 years ago today terrorist hijacked 3 planes. Two of them were rammed into the World Trade Center and violently butchered almost 3,000 people. The third plane did not fall from the sky is was forced into the ground when the passengers rose up and valiantly defended our country.

I think it’s great that Obama wants a day of service. That’s a wonderful idea to promote community and cohesiveness across America. I think him making that day of service to be today is insulting and an attempt to erase what happened here 8 years ago a silent memory. It would have been like FDR making December 7 national boating day. Sorry Obama, but you made yet another poor choice. With any luck the next individual will repeal this farce you tried to make out of today.

Belief - What's the Standard for My Beliefs

IMG_3864%5B4%5D[1]

Belief, it’s defines the way we perceive reality without actually affecting reality. Yet, we all seek to mold the world into the image of our beliefs regardless of the validity of said beliefs. I believe that it is important for an individual to understand their beliefs be they religious in nature or otherwise. Interestingly, I have always felt this way and seem unable to do any task without first hearing the why of the issue (much the annoyance of teachers, parents, and 3rd grade soccer coaches alike). So, I decided to go ahead and write down these beliefs of mine and see if I still believe them in the years to come.

To that end, I figured the best place to start with beliefs is the foundation of my beliefs. In so far as religious beliefs are concerned, my basis is founded on the scriptures (aka, the Bible), and SOLELY on the Bible. It is, in fact, a part of my beliefs that any extra-scriptural source which trys to dictate my spiritual beliefs and which contradicts the Bible is in error.

But why this belief? Well, some of it is faith. Faith is defined as “something that is believed especially with strong conviction” (Merriam-Webster). It is, to me, the top layer of belief, it is the result of something but not the source. If someone were to tell me they had faith in something I would ask why. Faith is not an end all reason (I’ll quantify this more fully some other time, so if this statement offends, confuses, or concerns you, I promise to explain it next time). So when I say some of it is faith, understand that there is a deeper foundation under that faith. Faith will allow me to leap from mountains, but it cannot coerce me to climb it in the first place.

So while faith motivates me to believe the Bible, the underlying foundation under that is logic. (Which I present to you as follows)

1. The Bible was written by many different authors over the course of more than a thousand of years. Yet the authors do not conflict with one another

2. The Old Testament and New Testament flawlessly presents the truth of God redeeming His Creation without any contradiction (though many people fail to study the Old Testament and are left believe that God was petty and cruel in the O.T. and suddenly changed His tune in the N.T.)

3. Apart from Genesis, the accounts recorded in the Bible were eye-witness accounts. In a hundred years when historians want to know about 9-11 or the Clinton Scandal they are going to use eye witness accounts as their sources. So why would I trust some guy from today to tell me that the Bible is incorrect when it says x about y subject? That makes as much sense as denying the holocaust or saying all those people who suffered in the camps didn’t really have to endure the things they lived through. I trust the eye-witness.

4. Archeological evidence and extra-biblical accounts confirm the locations of the cities within the Bible as well as the events that the Bible records.

5. I believe that the “God inspired” in 1 Timothy 3:16 (All scripture is inspired by God” is not the same as me seeing a picture and feeling inspired to write a short story about it. I believe that God used men as a musical composer chooses an instrument to play a specific part. It is the composer who writes down each and every note to be played and chooses an instrument to convey the mood he’s desires. God gave the words to each writer and allowed them to flavor the words with their particular style. But EACH and EVERY word is 100% accurate and fully as God intended as it to be shown.

6. If any part of the Bible were to be incorrect or outdated, EVERYTHING within the Bible must be rejected equally as none of it can be trusted to be accurate any longer.

Under these 6 beliefs I can do nothing but reject the notion that a person alive today could write ANYTHING truly from God that contradicts with what He’s already revealed. To do so would deny His unchanging nature (Hebrews 13:8) and present Him as a liar.

To that end, either the things written within the Bible are the 100% accurate, God-inspired words that exist as our ultimate standard for Christians, or NOTHING within the Bible can be trusted as there can be no measure for discerning which parts are true and which parts are in need of updating.

And that’s what I believe.

1st Corinthians 15:55

IMG_3864[4][1]

So, I need to make sure I have more time to post on this since I have several topics I’d like to write on, including a time traveling bathtub, but need to make sure I do things in the right order.

Which brings us to today’s post.

Death has always been a morbid fascination of mine ever since I was nine and my best friend died.  It has always struck me that this was not how God designed us to be, but was rather the unfortunate consequence of our choice to sin; marring the perfection of creation.  As I think back over the plethora of funerals I’ve attended I’ve been struck by two facts.

The first, and less profound, is that a funeral is not for the dead, but for the living.  To the dead, it doesn’t matter what happens to their body.  They have already entered into salvation or into judgment.  Instead, it is the living who have need for the funeral.  It is a time in which we are fully confronted with the reality of the individual’s death and a time in which we permit ourselves to say goodbye to our loved one.

The second fact is one which I especially noticed a week ago at my grandmother’s (dad’s mom) funeral just a week ago, almost to the hour.  There exists an undeniable, tangible difference between how a true Christian views death and how those without Christ, or even those who hope that maybe there is a Christ, view death.

To illustrate, allow me to present to you the death of my cousin Grant.  Grant is a believer and rejoices in heaven with the other saints, but at the end of his life he made his friendships with those who were not saved.  At his funeral they wept as those with no hope.  Those words just cannot accurately encompass the reality of the situation unless you have been in a similar situation.  It was not just a tragedy to them, it was a hopeless tragedy.  It is much like Hamlet throwing himself onto Ophelia’s coffin and demanding that he be buried along with her.

More than that however, there is even a difference between a person who claims to believe in Christ and a person who truly has been transformed by the regeneration of the cross.  While at my cousin’s funeral.  A friend of mine, approached me and stood by me for bit.  She hadn’t really known my cousin all that well, though she knew myself and my cousin’s sister, but she stood there and was tormented as one who was totally consumed by the fear of death.  To me, it was the most tragic part of the funeral.  Standing next to me was one who was claimed to trust in God but was wholly lacking in faith.

By was of contrast, however, I present my grandmother’s funeral.  I don’t know if I really saw anyone outside of her family there.  Some 50 people of Bennett and Blanton relation the majority (if not totality) of which have placed their faith in Christ.  And while we cried, it was not the uncontrolled weeping of hopelessness.  It was the sorrowful goodbye of two friends who are moving away from one another.

So allow me to come to the point of what I’m trying to say.  I’ve been to funerals of all sorts, from the very young, to the very old, from those of various religious beliefs and no religious beliefs.  And I have learned this very, very important fact:

Belief, no matter how absolute, in a set of religious laws cannot begin to compare to a person who has been transformed by a faith in Christ Jesus when they are confronted by death.  This peace is not something that can be manufactured by “religiousness” nor can it EVER be found in a pill.  The evidence of the divine Creator is unequivocally displayed in each and every believer when they stand before death.

1st Corinthians 15:55 says, “O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?” It refers to the still future day when God restores the perfection of creation and gives us imperishable bodies.  So while we may still feel the sting of death (which verse 56 tells us is sin) as believes in Christ we know that death has already lost its victory for the redeemed.

Sprinklers! (Part 3)

Benny%27s%20Place%5B7%5D[1]

Not a to report on the sprinkler project took place yesterday. It rained the first part of the morning meaning I wasn’t able to really get started until almost 10:30. I was able to finish the tunneling under the wires with only a medium amount of frustration, so that was nice. The rain made the ground a little more workable and the heat a LOT more tolerable so that was a nice side affect of the rain.

Once the tunnels were burrowed, it was just a matter of laying the pipe down and gluing it all together. It was rather surprising just how much time it took to glue the pipe all together. Hopefully, I’ve done a good job and everything will stick!

I was also able to get the controller installed in the garage and the wires stretched out to the valves, I’ll hook the valves up to the wires first thing this morning. Here’s a list of the remain tasks.

1) Attach valve wires

2) Test system for leaks.

3) Attach Sprinklers

4) Cover up trenches

5) Install Rain Detector ( still might have to be delayed since it gets installed on the roof)

There’s not a lot to show visually about the difference from yesterday to today, so here’s a picture of the remaining parts in my house.

Sprinklers! (Part 2)

Benny's Place

I realized I hadn’t posted the above photo before on the blog yet and today seemed like a rather appropriate day to do so.  The sign comes from my Grandfather Bennett’s (nick-named “Benny”) garage.  A couple year back us Grandkids were given an option to have any one thing of their grandparent’s that they just really desired.  It was, of course, a time in which everyone was saying something along the lines of “well, if no one else really wants this then….” For me, the sign in the garage was definitely what I desired.

My grandpa was well known to us for making stuff out of junk.  He’d take old pipes and such and make the most amazing things (Like a playground for us grandkids).  Anyway, I felt it would be rather appropriate to tag this projects I do with the above photo since I inherited a lot of his “I can build that” attitude.

So, yesterday saw phase 3 of the project (with phase 1 being the research, planning, and presentation for approval, and phase 2 being the last post about tapping into the water line).  I called up a local (and free) business that came out and marked all the lines that were in my yard (electricity, phone, cable, etc).  With the lines properly marked, I laid out my parts and went over my plans one last time to make sure I had everything.  Here’s a picture of the parts I’m using (minus the parts I used in part 1, and 620 Ft of PVC pipe)

IMG_7423

Convinced that I had all the connectors, couplers, glue, and controllers I needed, it was time to head out to Home Depot and rent a machine I affectionately refer to as “The Beast”

IMG_7424This thing took three full-grown men to lift it into the back of my dad’s truck.  My neighbor, Mr. Stroope,  and I managed to impair its decent just enough to not destroy the driveway getting it out of the truck.  It is a wonderful machine though.  Rather than having to dig every last inch of trench myself (a nightmarish task), “The Beast” would dig a perfect, 2-inch wide, variable depth trench with the dirt laid up in a pretty little line right next to it.  It was, however, a beast to pull (because you couldn’t push it, you had to pull it) and I was quiet worn out by the time I had dug all my trenches.

I had hoped to get the whole project completed in one day, and at first focused on digging the trench for one zone than laying out the piping for the zone.  I realized after the first zone was complete, however, that I was really needed to focus on getting the trenches dug completely so I wouldn’t have to worry about renting “The Beast” a second day.  Mr. Stroope was very impressed with the machine and I personally think he’ll invent some reason in the near future to let him rent and play with it himself in the near future.

At the end of the day, I had accomplished the following on the sprinkler project

1) Attached the sprinkler system to the water supply

2) Dug the trenches for all the zones

3) Laid out the pipe for half the zones.

Here’s some photos of my very own Maginot line.

My Anti-siphon Valves that Control the Zones

Though this project has been largely “McCormick’s Law” free, I have encountered two problems.  The first is all the Cable/Phone lines that cut straight through my backyard.  The solution is simple in theory.  You simply buy an attachment for going under sidewalks glue it onto a length of PVC pipe, hook it onto a water hose, and let the water pressure burrow your way to success.  There are two problems with it though.  The first is it has a tendency to go… askew.  Primarily, that means down, but it also means left or right.  In one of the burrows I did, I went down by about… 4 inches and too far left by 2 inches.  It may sound like nothing, but it really adds up in a project like this, especially when you have no true method of finding the errant other than blindly digging.  The other was hitting rocks, water pressure just won’t cut through rocks as quickly as I need it to.  The second issue I encountered was this:

IMG_7432Don’t see the issue, let’s zoom in a little.

IMG_7433That funny little black thing is a TV cable.  One of two cables right next to each other that Time Warner failed to mark for me.  It specifically leads to my internet.  I’ll call them up tomorrow and have them come fix it after I lay my pipe there.  Since they failed to mark it, I’m not liable for it’s destruction, fortunately.  Also fortunately, I was able to hook up to a non-damaged outlet and keep internet in the house!

Total time of the project so far (times include mid-projects trips to Lowes/Home Depot to get missing items):

Thursday: 4 Hours to cut through old pipe and solder on new pipes)

Saturday: 12 Hours

Monday’s Tasks:

1) Finish laying out pipes (Zones 3 and 4).

2) Test system for leaks.

3) Attach Sprinklers

4) Install Controller

5) Cover up trenches

6) Install Rain Detector (might have to be delayed since it gets installed on the roof)

Sprinklers! (Part 1)

The latest project that I’ve gotten to undertake recently is installing sprinklers around the house.  Several months ago I measured the area around the house for my dad.  Last week I was able to use those measurements to plan out the placement of a sprinkler system.  It’s been a long time desire of mine to get  a sprinkler system installed so we would be able to keep grass alive in the midst of these Texas summers.

After getting the plans laid out and getting the green light from mom and dad it was time to start with the water supply.

IMG_7417

Here’s the old water supply line into the house.  I was rather glad to find it.  Originally I was going to tap into the supply inside the house, but then I noticed a strange little water meter box just to the side of the house… completely full of dirt.  Some minor digging revealed that it was the cutoff valve shown above.  The extremely beat up looking cutoff valve shown above.

The plan was simple, cut off the old pipe, solder on a new pipe with a T leading to the sprinkler system.  Then McCormick's law kicked in. (I made McCormick’s law, it states: The easier a project should be the longer it will take).  The first problem I encountered was the beat up pipe.  I tried to use pipe cutters on it, but all they did was crush the pipe (it was REALLY cheap/old piping) so I had to dig out a larger area to allow the use of a hack saw on the pipe.  Once I finally got the pipe off, I realized that I had to make my cuts further back than I had originally planed due to some major pinches in the pipe I noticed.  My original plan wasn’t going to work, I needed some couplers. So after my 2nd trip out to Lowe’s today (the first happened when I first got up to get some plumber’s bread), I was ready to solder it up.  I had a full can of MAPP-Pro gas and plenty of flux, it should have been easy, right?

About half an hour later and some Google searches on “how to use MAPP gas” I discovered a link to the torch head I was using.  Turns out the torch head was incompatible with MAPP gas.  Oops.  3rd trip back to Lowe’s later and the correct torch head (which was more expensive) and I was now ready to get soldering.  I had meant to take more pictures, but once I got back with the right head, everything just went FLYING.  So here’s the final product.  And best part, there’s no leaks!

Shogi Boards, Stories, Fish Tanks, and Certifications.

So, long time no update.  Which is kinda strange since I was in the middle of a story and a project, but I hit a wall for both of them.

With the story, I realized that while I had wanted to make a book for nieces/nephews etc., I had just introduced the main character who had just graduated college and was going to get a job.  It makes for a bad kid’s story when they can’t identify with the main character.  Rewriting it so that the main character is more around the right age won’t be too hard, but it will take some time to make sure the story still goes when I want to.  I actually know how the story will end and the climatic…er.. well climax of the story.  Being patient long enough to get there, however, is the hard part for me.

With the Shogi board I hit a major problem.  The method of getting the images onto the pieces themselves have proven… not good.  No matter which method I tried, the images wouldn’t really stick to the wood, and what little image did remain, would make the area around it impossible to stain.  And seeing as how this is supposed to be a log budget project, I’ve been having problems deciding where to go.

Then it hit me: Card stock paper!  I’m going to print the images onto a piece of cardstock then I’ll use an exacto-knife to cut out the shapes I need.  It’s much sturdier than regular paper and won’t rip on me.  Then I can use the cut outs like stencil paper and paint the images I want onto the shogi pieces.  It will apply paint only for the images and allow me to apply a nice stain once it dries.  Perfect!

As for the fish tank, it seems that everyone forgot to mention that you’re only supposed to start off with a couple fish to get the bacteria in the tank going.  Putting so many fish in at once caused my tank to go into shock. So far the following fish have died:

1 blue guppy x 2 (I replaced him and his replacement died, then I learned that I should hold off on buying replacements until the tank settles)

2 Neons

1 yellow guppy

2 Mollies

Making for a total of 7 dead fish (since the blue guppy’s replacement died).  The fancy tail guppy has survived and seems to love to show off for me (though he looks a little aged from the survival).  A single neon, both algae eaters, and the catfish have also survived.  My last trip to PetSmart revealed that my water had FINALLY balanced out from the initial damage so many fish had caused and I have to go ahead to start getting my fish back, SLOWLY.  I think I’ll start off with 2 guppies then work on the mollies and neons in another couple weeks (or month)

Also for those who didn’t hear, I passed my Network+ Certification a month ago and am now working on my CCNA.

I actually find this funny

The other day I saw a Mario Cartoon (made back in the 80’s) and it got me thinking about how Mario and Luigi are always attacking Bowser.  And then I thought, “Hey, I wonder what Bowser’s side of the story is about a couple of Italian “Plumbers” from Brooklyn who wondered into his universe and stole his girlfriend.”  Which made me laugh and go, hey, an Italian from Brooklyn with an obvious cover-up job?  It just screams Mafia ties. Thus I give you the Adventures of Mafia Mario and Luigi.

bowser

Ah, Peach my dear, how is your dinner?

peach

Oh, It’s perfect Bowser, it’s just…

bowser

Yes?

peach

It’s just that I fear for your safety.  If Mario,

bowser

Mario!  Mario!  All we seem to talk about anymore is that blasted Plumber!  Please my love, let us discuss something else

peach

No!  We MUST talk about this, we cannot continue to meet like this!  If Mario found out… I don’t know what he’d do, but I know it would be horrible for you.

bowser

Oh, Peach my love, I’d risk it all just to enjoy one more minute with you, and I know you love me too.

peach

I do, Bowser, I do!

bowser

Then why don’t you tell Mario you’re leaving him for good?  Why must we keep our love a secret?  Why do you stay with him?

peach

I… I don’t know.  It’s just… you don’t know how he used to be.  He used to be a good man, Bowser.  He used to be a doctor until that fateful day.

<FLASHBACK TIME!>

dr m welcome

Hello!  Welcome to my clinic, how may I help you?

yellow

I have a message from Mr. Danza, he says, “Hello”

Wha-? No!  Wait Please!

yellow

RATA-TAT-TAT-TAT!

NOOOOOOOOooooooooooooooo!

<END FLASHBACK!>

peach

*SNIFF*  Miraculously he survived, but he was a changed man and followed in the “family business” of plumbing from then on

bowser

Oh, Peach, I had no idea.   Nice as he may have once been, however, that doesn’t change what he is now.  You must -

Mafia Mario

You must stop disgracing me by affiliating with this lowlife! Peach!

bowser

peach

 *GASP!* Mario!

Mafia Mario

Peach, why do you persist in dishonoring me in this manner after all I’ve done for you and your father?  Is this truly how you have chosen to repay the kindness of me and my brother?

Mafia Luigi

No, brother, this is certainly not how one chooses to repay the kindness of the Mario Brothers.  Surely she must have an explanation.

bowser

She doesn’t need to explain anything to you!  Now leave at once, least you incur the wrath of the Koopa Clan!  For too long my seven brothers and I have tolerated your presence in our lands!

Mafia Luigi

Heh…. ha ha…. HA HA HA HA.  Did youse hear that Mario?  He warns us of his seven brothers!

Mafia Mario

Indeed, Luigi.  This is quite the joke.

bowser

What do you mean by this laughter!?

Mafia Mario

Let us just say that we had difficulty in finding your house and imposed ourselves on the good hospitality of your siblings.  But you need not worry, we repaid their generosity with gifts of our own.

Mafia Luigi

HA!  Gifts of our own.  Youse a riot Mario.  We gaves them gifts alright.  Gifts of hot lead!  I don’t think they liked it very much though.

peach

No! Mario, say it isn’t true!

Mafia Mario

Go wait in the car Peach while I “rescue” you from this Lizard.

peach

Wait Mario!  Please… I… I’ll never see him again, please just spare his life!

bowser

Peach no!

Mafia Mario

Very well Peach. What you ask of me is reasonable and I will aquiest to this final request of yours.  Come Luigi we depart

Mafia Luigi

Youse got it Mario.  Consider yourself lucky this time lizard.  Weze outta here.

bowser

CURSE YOU MARIO!  ONE DAY I WILL SAVE PEACH FROM YOUR IMPRISONMENT.  I SWEAR THIS TO YOU!

<The End>
